It is important to have an effective monitoring and evaluation system in the larger project and programme cycle. It assists with project implementation, but also indicates progress to implementers, partners, donors and other stakeholders. It highlights changes made due to an intervention. Effective monitoring and evaluation measure how, and to what extent, a programme or project was successful in reaching its goals. The purpose of this module is to ensure that students understand the basic terminology used in monitoring and evaluation, and can apply it to the approaches of Theory of Change, Logical Frameworks and results-based management.  On completion of this module, students must be able to define the various terms used in monitoring and evaluation and demonstrate the ability to populate a Theory of Change and Logical Framework for an intervention.

It is imperative that as part of the monitoring and evaluation process, implementers must understand how the results of the intervention and evaluation will be reported to different stakeholders.  It is useful to communicate the reporting structure of the monitoring and evaluation system from the outset of the project, and not assume that there is a clear pathway. It is important to define what type of reports will completed during the course of an intervention. It is important to communicate the monitoring and evaluation findings to different stakeholders. The audience (donors, community groups, other implementing agencies, government departments etc.) have different needs concerning your findings. The purpose of this module is to ensure that students understand data flow, how data can be presented, the format of reports and the dissemination and use of results.
