Higher Certificate in Early Childhood Care and Education
This programme will develop educators who can support and promote early learning and development for babies, toddlers and young children up to and including four years of age. By applying for this qualification, participants gain an entry-level qualification that will afford them recognition as an early childhood development (ECD) educator. This is a pathway to a Diploma in ECCE or a Bachelor of Education in ECCE.

To apply for this qualification, a student requires:
• A Grade 12 National Senior Certificate
OR
• Relevant NQF Level 4 qualification

This module will enable you to use accurate spoken and written English language to communicate efficiently on all levels as an educator in the Early Childhood Care and Education situation. In this module, we will focus on developing your reading skills to enhance your ability to understand and critically evaluate texts. Applying proper language conventions in the writing of letters, reports and other documents and use computer software for presentations. These are fundamental skills and knowledge that can be applied in practice and will also assist you in studying your other modules.

These activities and materials are planned to support children’s holistic development. This module will cover how to plan age-appropriate activities to stimulate children and support their development.

This module makes use of the distinction between assessing people and evaluating information, things or objects. The assessment will therefore be a judgement of performance, measured against criteria, answering the question: Has it been achieved? Evaluation will be a value judgement, answering the question: How well? The purpose of this assessment and evaluation is to provide all involved with sufficient information to make informed judgements, choices and decisions regarding the development of children, the performance of the educator and the suitability of the programme offered.

This module will integrate theoretical knowledge with practice-based experience in environments where functional Early Childhood Development (ECD) programmes are offered, linking the programme to learning in and from practice, in a supervised situation.
